When you hear the word genre, most people think of categories, groups, etc. However, to a writer/reader there's a little more to it than that. Genre affects the way you create a paper. It raises questions such as: Who is my audience in the genre I am trying to portray? What borders, guides, and rules are there to fulfill my genre? And If I do not fulfill these guides, is it still the same genre?
Although it may seem like genres have set standards, they are actually very flexible. They are set due to the writer's own experiences and reasons as to why they are writing. This is so that we can communicate effectively: to get a point across in the fastest or most understanding way possible.
The last genre I composed was an academic presentation of my music evolution throughout my life. It consisted of a timeline of my music interests and how they affected my life. In presentations, the main point is to engage the presenter and the audience orally. They also contain more visual aspects rather than just writing. This is to add more dimensions to the purpose of the writer/presenter. In my presentation, I added the pictures or logos of the music artists I was describing to help my audience know who I was talking about. The pictures and snippets of my past music history were also used to trigger a response of nostalgia in my audience if they shared the same music background. I stuck to the boundaries of this genre; I introduced the topic I was discussing, then continued with a timeline, and finished off with why I was presenting this certain topic. This allowed me to communicate with my audience in the most clear, effective, and fastest way since there was a time limit placed on my presentation.
