Dreams by Fleetwood Mac:
Although I'm a total music junkie and have about a hundred favorite songs, Dreams by Fleetwood Mac has to be the number #1. In the song, Stevie Nicks personally talks to someone using "you" a lot. The purpose of the song is to persuade the person to leave and do what they want to do and feel. The song is most likely about a failing relationship that is coming to an end and Stevie is persuading her audience to finally let go. During the time this song was written, she was in a relationship with Lindsay Buckingham. She has also made it clear the song was written for her in an interview. The audience can also be anyone in the same situation: people in failing relationships, or in the need of letting go. The rhetorical appeal used in this song is pathos. Stevie uses a lot of emotion and the way she sings the song is very soothing and calm. The words are also easily identifiable so you can understand what she is saying. You get a real sense of the situation and in some ways can be relatable depending on the audience. As I said before, the song is very calm and this sets the mood for the purpose she is trying to get across. Usually break ups are sad and sometimes angry, however, here it seems almost peaceful. The only powerful points in the song are in the chorus when she sings "Thunder only happens when it's raining/ Players only love you when they're playing/ Say, women, they will come and they will go/ When the rain washes you clean, you'll know". This chorus shows examples of just how life is, how things fall, and the things you can't control. Fleetwood Mac is known for playing mostly pop rock songs and Dreams falls into that category. The conventions of pop rock that Dreams expresses are the expression of feelings usually within a relationship, and more instrumental sounds rather than electrical beats.
